The world is constantly changing; that’s not the problem. It’s how we deal with change that matters.

Currently, a $68 trillion multi-generational wealth transfer, globalisation and digitisation is distorting how families engage – with themselves, the world and other families beyond.

The next generation of these Ultra-High Net Worth (UHNW) families are not totally engaged with the family leadership or involved in their family businesses.

Existing wealth management options do not address the digital, social and communication needs this disjoint causes. So, valuable opportunities to make a positive impact are lost.

It’s not the kind of legacy anyone wants to leave.

The Challenge

As the sole Product Designer, I was given six months from scratch to design and support the build of a private network that encompasses tools to define and evolve a compelling purpose and legacy for UHNW families. Encompassing an interactive vision, charter and Family Value Reports linking values to impact and legacy. Additionally, designing the experience for meeting/event management, governance, analytics and reporting.

Solution

The project started with meeting all the senior internal and external stakeholders for around one week to capture all the business and design requirements. I then proceeded to go off and produce design assets in weekly design sprints over six months to be signed off by the director and put into production.

While producing the design patterns, I assisted the development team with quality output before stakeholder review.

We ran user tests weekly in person and via video calls to iterate and fix certain features as fast as possible before the first significant release. Most weeks went smoothly, and others were embarrassing, highlighting even simple errors.

I produced the designs with Desktop, Pad and Mobile with User Edit screens.

Design System

I designed and managed Itriom’s design system with IBM Carbon and custom components. 'Expressive' and 'Productive' IBM components had been utilised as I had to make the platform visually strong on the front-end with a logical and trusted design pattern for the back-end - User Administration.

The Product team supported my choice of the design system for the following core principles.

Carbon is open. The design system is a distributed effort, guided by the principles of the open source movement. Carbon’s users are also its makers, and everyone is encouraged to contribute.

Carbon is inclusive. It’s designed and built to be accessible to all, regardless of ability or situation.

Carbon is modular and flexible. The system’s modularity ensures maximum flexibility in execution. Its components are designed to work seamlessly with each other, in whichever combination suits the needs of the user.

Carbon puts the user first. Using rigorous research into users’ needs and desires, Carbon is laser-focused on real people.

Carbon builds consistency. Based on the IBM Design Language, every element and component of Carbon was designed from the ground up to work elegantly together to ensure consistent, cohesive user experiences.

Additionally, developers have a bank of ready-made code that helps with production speed. Components are widely accessible and usable with all well-regarded design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch. and many others.

User Flows

Itriom’s platform is expansive, covering many features found across many sites that specialise in one area. For example, Linkedin is commonly used for professional networking and has strong networking capabilities. Even though everyone in our Product Team and our user base use LinkedIn daily, there were still many questions about how chat/networking works; we all use those features subconsciously.

I thoroughly researched Likedin’s chat and networking features, mapped out their flows, and showcased them back to stakeholders for us to decide how we would like those features to look and function within our platform. In addition, I researched many other business/investment-related platforms in the same manner for other features Itriom provide.

Below you will find a few of the many flows produced.

Wireframes

Various Screens

Wireframes were created quickly within weekly design sprints to demonstrate understanding of business requirements and for stakeholders to agree on a design for the various product features. Decisions made on many elements often impacted others that appeared many screens later. Wireframing got us quickly to the unknown constraints ahead of producing hi-fidelity designs and helped to keep all stakeholders on the same page when putting designs into production.

Hi Fidelity Designs

Main Dashboard

The dashboard is the page users first land on when logging back on the platform. Users would not stay logged in usually and would sign in around once weekly to stay updated on various concerns. We didn’t want users to jump around the whole platform to find simple updates, so I designed it to have many entry points to the various and significant features used heavily around the platform.

Users can also log in as an administrator to customise the dashboard layout to suit their needs. However, the dashboard would be pre-configured while onboarding the client in person.

Charter

This dashboard is the shining star that the Family Principle and its members would refer to in getting them on track to build their lasting legacy.

The purpose section would be tailored to the Principle’s Values and determined during the onboarding process. This huge step ensures that the users get real benefits from using the platform. Values determine which families would connect with other families and what kind of initiatives to initiate or participate in within their network.

SDG influences and goals are also determined during the onboarding process and relate to the family values.

Initiatives

The Initiatives dashboard highlights which initiatives the user is a part of and indicates their success at a high level. Users can click through to any initiatives to get granular updates and stats.

Initiative

Showcases all the details around the initiative, its activity, current stats and what more needs to be done to achieve the initiative's objectives.

The initiative is a customisable page where a user can update the activity and choose various charts to show from a provided library.

Events

The events dashboard features a fully-fledged invite-based system that supports principles, their families and the people they are connected to. Members come together to create/co-create and organise initiatives and their objectives.

Event

Hosts all the critical details around a particular event, allowing an admin or event organiser to customise.

The Forum

The Product team decided to design our Forum features very similar to Linkedin due to the familiarity of our platform users.

Family Member Profile

A family member’s profile page is fully customisable by the user and helps to communicate their background, values and purpose. A key page for other families to look at while considering connecting.

Connections

A list of connections with default options set to display ‘All’. Filters can be selected to show only specific categories of connections. It also serves to find new connections.

Groups

Groups benefit families and their members and connect members to discuss progress around specific initiatives. Layout and function are very similar to the connections page; in this case, some group admin options appear as exampled.

Group

Groups benefit families and their members and connect members to discuss progress around specific initiatives. Layout and function are very similar to Linkedin.

Insights

Insights are produced by families, their editors and even Itriom’s editorial team. Insights cover a wide range of ESG and UN’s SDG related topics. The CRM hosts the insights dashboard and the insights themselfs.

Insight

Insights are hosted on the integrated CRM and are fully configurable by the user.

The Result

Itriom now enables UHNW families to find clear values and a clarity of purpose. Engaging the next generation by giving them a true voice in building initiatives, delivering purpose and creating a legacy with lasting and significant ESG impact.

In shaping and delivering initiatives, Itriom offers a secure, trusted, invite-only peer-to-peer platform. With a network for family principals and decision makers to meet and engage in meaningful dialogue while collaborating digitally, physically and discretely.

Itriom provides a single mechanism to develop bespoke family charters which link values, purpose, initiatives and legacy to impact.

Unlike other platforms, they offer a single source for defining, driving and measuring ESG and SDG outcomes.
